Ketching Up
I figured I'd try to ketchup, so to speak, for the things happening between now and Sept. 27 of last year. What's happened in the world since I last wrote...
- Wii are the Champions
- On November, 19th of last year a couple dozen Nintendo-maniacs waited outside the Council Bluffs, Iowa, Wal-Mart for 7 hours in the blistering cold. Only 28 Wiis were inside and, fortunately, I had the number 21 written on my hand. You would think 30 some Nintendo fans would spend the whole time playing with their DSes and GameBoys but we actually had a good time talking about Nintendo related and non-related stuff. It was kind of like an outside nerd party. Despite just ridiculing myself, we did have a good time and were led one by one to the counter to purchase our Wii, accessories and games. I drove home and unpacked every piece with a smile on my face and applied power. As an old man (of 28), I went to bed shortly.
- Since then I've played a lot of bowling, beaten down Ganon in Zelda: Twilight Princess, waited for back orders of HD cables, downloaded virtual console games and even surfed the Internet on my Wii. For months now, I've read articles and heard people complaining about not being able to get a Wii and smiled to myself with the satisfaction of having one of the first ones. I am extremely satisfied with it and incredibly glad to see Nintendo racing from 3rd to 1st in the "console wars" of the past year. Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy are coming in December and November, respectively, and I'm quite anxious.
- The Audible James Bond
- I used to read a lot when I was a kid. When I say "a lot", I mean I'd come home with more of those Book It certificates for free Pizza Hut personal pan pizza faster than I could use them. Today, with all these video games, movies and TV shows, not to mention the 8 hour work day and the family life in general, it's hard to find time to sit down and read (or maybe it's because I'm just lazy).
- A couple years ago, I used to spend my daily 20 minute commute to work listening to NPR. I quickly became sick of hearing about the same stuff every day and turned to listening to audio books. I had a very small library of "borrowed" audio books and listened to them more than once. A few months ago, I found Audible.com and their huge library of audio books. I quickly signed up for their monthly membership plan for about 14 bucks which includes a free credit (or book) each month. Each book can be listened to online, uploaded to an iPod-type device or burned to CD. Once I had an account, deciding what book to get with my first credit became a chore.
- I have always been a fan of the James Bond movies (Roger Moore is the best one, you know!) and read about Ian Flemming on Wikipedia. It was then I decided to listen to the original books starting with Casino Royale. I just began GoldFinger this past Monday and I'd have to say with absolute certainty that the books are infinitely better than the movies. Mr. Flemming is a master of using words to describe a scene so accurately in one's head. The books' James Bond character is much more real and much less slutty than the one in the movies. He is a professional killer but never puts anyone in danger but the "bad guys". Bond respects and fears his boss, doesn't use Q's gadgets and usually the only woman he sleeps with is the one he rescues from the enemy. Despite the fact that the books were written in the 50s and set shortly after the second World War, they hold up rather well and I enjoy them immensely. My daily commute has actually become an enjoyable part of my day.
- Futurama
- I've written a couple posts on the return of Futurama and since then it has been confirmed the first of the new direct to DVD movies is to arrive November 27th. That's awesome. More Info here including possible spoilers (didn't read 'em myself).
- Simpsons Movie
- We went to this movie as a family last night and I thought it was excellent. The film was animated like Futurama with the 3D technologies and included probably every Simpson's character ever created in the 400+ episodes. I even think they took the Simpsons characters and made them almost more real than they've ever been on TV. A lot of depth was added and I think was important to making this feel like a movie and not just a really long episode. Here I am waxing poetic about the Simpsons but even though I haven't faithfully watched the last few seasons, I used to watch the show every week. By the way, stay during the credits to see some extra stuff!
- Heroes
A little less than a year ago, Heroes made its debut on NBC. I spotted the ads from time to time and wasn't sure about it. About 10 minutes into the premier episode I was hooked. The show is set to continue on 9/24 and I can't wait.- The show is about a group of people who "thought they were like everyone else... until they realized they have incredible abilities". Think X-Men but before Xavier could provide a safe haven for the mutants. These are regular people battling it out. Each episode furthers the story and every commercial break is a cliffhanger which leaves you with a feeling probably akin to a heroin addict who's going through withdrawal.
- Doctor Who
The 3rd season of the "new" edition of Doctor Who is showing on the SciFi channel. This is another television show to which I'm addicted. Fortunately, for me, I have afflicted my wife and son with this addiction. We watch the show every Friday as a family and, despite my son's reaction to some of the scary bits, we all enjoy it immensely. Some people might think it's cruel to let a 4 year old watch a show with evil robots and pig monsters but I don't think it's a bad thing for a kid these days to learn the difference between fiction and non-fiction, even at that early age. Anyway, I'm looking forward to tonight's episode!- Bush
- What can I say? Our government is more messed up than ever and despite only breaking the law a few times, this man still has not been impeached. The war he started continues to drag on and none of the Democratic candidates are even a beacon of hope in ending it. Get U.S. out of Iraq. It's time they started to take some of the responsibility for their own country and the same for our own politicians.
That should be about it. :^) Now that I have all that out of the way, I can make daily posts again.
